Bruce's Beach Mug

Willa and Charles Bruce bought beachfront property in Manhattan Beach in 1912 and built a resort where Black families could gather, rest, and exist without condition. The city of Manhattan Beach spent years trying to take it from them through harassment, zoning laws, and eventually eminent domain. They got the land. They couldn't erase what it represented. Black people built a place of joy and community under those conditions, and that's the part that matters.
